If your summer road trip runs to the Adriatic, Tuscany or the lakes, Italy will almost certainly be the most expensive fuel stop of the journey. That is not bad luck at the pump, it is tax policy: Italy carries some of the heaviest fuel excise in the European Union. Until the start of 2026 it levied the highest diesel excise in the EU, and a January reform aligned petrol and diesel at roughly 67 cents per litre of duty each, on top of 22 percent VAT (Tax Foundation, firstonline). That structural tax load, not the oil price, is why Italy sits near the top of European price tables.
As of 22 July 2026, Italian petrol averages 1.99 €/L and diesel 2.15 €/L, against an EU average of 1.88 €/L and 1.96 €/L. Here is how Italy compares with the countries you will drive through to reach it:

Fill up before the autostrada
The single biggest avoidable cost in Italy is the motorway premium. Fuel on the autostrada network is dramatically more expensive than the same brand on an ordinary road: The Local puts the gap at "20 cents or more" per litre, and MIMIT's own price monitoring shows the motorway self-service average running well above the national road network (The Local). On a 55-litre fill, 20 cents a litre is 11 euros thrown away for the convenience of not leaving the toll road.
The fix is planning. Top up on the approach roads before you join the autostrada, or take an exit into a nearby town when the tank drops. Unbranded stations, the pompe bianche, are typically cheaper than Eni, Esso or Q8, and stations in mountain resorts, coastal tourist strips and historic city centres run well above average, so a forecourt on the edge of an ordinary town beats both the motorway and the resort.
Choose "fai da te", never "servito"
Almost every Italian station offers two prices at the same pump: fai da te (self-service, you fuel the car yourself) and servito (an attendant does it). The difference is not a tip, it is a genuine surcharge, typically 10 to 20 cents per litre and higher in tourist areas (The Local, italien.news). Look for the fai da te column on the price totem and use the self-service pump. On a family holiday tank that one habit alone can save 8 to 11 euros per fill.
Two regional notes. Prices are generally lower across the northern plains and rise as you go south and onto the islands, where Sicily and Sardinia carry the extra cost of shipping fuel across water. And Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the region bordering Slovenia and Austria, runs a long-standing regional fuel discount for its residents, upheld by the EU Court of Justice and continuing in 2026, though it applies only to locally registered vehicles, not to tourists (Regione FVG).
Where to top up on the way in
The corridor table above tells you which side of each border is cheaper, and the practical rule follows the numbers. Coming from Slovenia over the Trieste or Tarvisio routes, Slovenia is usually the cheaper side, so fill up around Sežana or Postojna before crossing. Coming from Switzerland over the Gotthard, the opposite is true: Swiss fuel is far dearer, so cross into Italy on a low tank and refuel just past the border.
