How to read the spread
The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive market in this table is money in your pocket if you drive across borders. Filling a 55-litre tank in Germany instead of Austria currently costs about 19.14 € extra; against Slovenia the difference is around 30.49 € per tank.
Three structural forces explain most of the spread. First, taxes: excise duties and VAT differ enormously, and they, not crude oil, are why Germany and the Netherlands sit at the top of European price tables while Luxembourg built a business model on cheap fuel. Second, currency: for Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Denmark and Switzerland, exchange-rate moves shift the euro comparison week to week. Third, market structure: dense competition (Germany's 14,000+ stations) produces bigger intraday swings, while concentrated markets move slowly.
