Most fuel-price charts tell an oil story. Romania's 2026 chart tells a tax story, and it is one of the clearest natural experiments in Europe this year.

The January step is textbook tax pass-through: prices jumped in the first weeks of the year with no oil-market driver behind them, and Romanian motoring media said so explicitly at the time. The April-to-June window is the more interesting part. While Germany and France sat near their war-era peaks, Romania's capped prices fell so far that the Competition Council reported mid-June pump prices below the EU average, petrol by about 7.2 percent and diesel by about 3.7 percent, taxes included.
Then the supports came away. Our station-level data shows the reinstated diesel excise arriving at Romanian pumps in the first days of July, on top of the war-driven rebound the whole continent felt.
