It rarely makes headlines, price-comparison coverage mostly ignores it, and yet millions of drivers across Europe, above all in Italy, Poland and Eastern Europe, fill up with autogas every week. The economics, briefly
LPG's appeal is simple: per litre it typically costs around half of petrol. A litre of LPG contains less energy, so consumption runs some 10 to 20 percent higher, but the net saving per kilometre remains substantial wherever the price ratio holds. That ratio is policy-driven: most European states tax autogas lightly, and the table above is largely a map of those tax choices.
The catch has never been the price; it is the network. Italy, with more than 4,600 LPG stations in our data, treats autogas as core infrastructure. France and Spain maintain solid coverage. Elsewhere the network thins out fast, and route planning becomes part of owning the car.
Note for summer travellers
If you drive an LPG vehicle south this summer, the good news is that the classic holiday corridors are well served: Italy, Croatia (0.87 €/L currently) and Slovenia all have workable networks. Check station-level availability along your specific route on the live map before you commit to a mountain pass with a quarter of a tank. And if your home market is missing from our table, that is a data gap we are actively working to close.
